Before Us, During Us, After Us is a reflection on how human life continues to search for meaning and belonging within increasingly digital environments. Through moving image, interactive spaces, and speculative narratives, Xiyan Chen explores how technological landscapes reshape our sense of presence, connection, and emotional experience.
The exhibition unfolds across three moments. It begins with a world that appears to exist beyond human intention, where digital forms evolve quietly on their own. We then move into a space where our body encounters technology through gesture and touch. Chen poses important questions, such as how intimacy changes when it passes through digital interfaces. Finally, she imagines a future where artificial intelligence subtly shapes the environments people inhabit.
Rather than presenting technology as spectacle or innovation, Chen approaches it as a landscape we must learn to inhabit. Her work reflects on how empa- thy, curiosity, and human sensitivity might endure within environments increasingly shaped by digital systems. In doing so, the exhibition becomes less about technology itself and more about the quiet question that runs beneath it: how we continue to recognise ourselves, and one another, within these evolving worlds.
